EMA presidents review the main 2025 activities and provide an outlook for 2026.
Dear colleagues and friends of the European Magnetism Association EMA,
As we welcome 2026, we extend our best wishes to you and your loved ones, wishing you a fruitful and enjoyable year. Time passes swiftly, and the world has seen profound changes since our last New Year’s EMA Editorial. Now more than ever, we share the hope for a peaceful future, one in which science and the free exchange of ideas across borders play a vital role. At EMA, we remain committed to fostering openness and inclusivity within the European magnetism community. By fostering collaboration, knowledge transfer, and scientific exchange, we aim to unite people and strengthen the bonds that drive research forward. This ambition reflects EMA’s core mission as a learned society, which is to expand knowledge, connect individuals, and contribute to the progress of society.
In 2025, the 14th Joint European Magnetic Symposia (JEMS) took place in August in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, chaired by Oliver Gutfleisch. The JEMS 2025 was a great success with more than 760 participants from 39 countries. In our special EMA Session, we had exciting plenary lectures by the EMA Young Scientist Awards winners Alvaro Martín Gallo Cordova (2024) and Johanna Fischer (2025). On the side of higher education, the European School of Magnetism (ESM) took place in June 2025 in Liège, Belgium, chaired by our EMA Officer for Higher Education, Bertrand Dupé, and Flavio Abreu Araujo. The school trained and connected about 100 young scientists and engineers in magnetism, coming from all over Europe and beyond. Over two weeks, the international students enjoyed a broad offer of lectures, tutorials, practicals, round tables about diversity and career development, and direct contact with speakers from the industry. We are grateful to all who contributed to this successful event! The abstracts, slides and recordings of lectures from all previous editions of ESM are available in this repository.
We are now looking forward to the major event in magnetism that will take place in Europe in 2026: The Intermag 2026 - IEEE International Magnetics Conference 2026 – will take place April 13th – 17th 2026 in Manchester, UK, chaired by Tom Thomson. Thus, as is customary, no JEMS will be organised in 2026, and EMA is supporting Intermag 2026, looking forward to an exciting conference in Manchester! The next edition of JEMS will take place in 2027 from August 29th to September 3rd in Prague, Czech Republic, chaired by Evgenia Tereshina-Chitrova and co-chaired by Vladimír Sechovský, supported by the International Advisory Committee of JEMS – stay tuned.
Please also don’t forget our continuous ongoing events, like the EMA Early-Career Seminars, for which nominations are always welcome, and the activities by the Young Working Group of EMA. Furthermore, we invite all national communities to reach out to their representatives in the General Council of EMA, getting in touch and actively engaged in EMA initiatives. For details and more information, please refer to our website.
Finally, we would like to remind you of two important EMA-related points:
-
Nominations for 2026 EMA awards are open both for the Dominique Givord Award and the Young Scientist Award. Nomination Deadline: January 31st, 2026!
-
Review or start your EMA membership for 2026. Your membership fees go back to the community by supporting our actions, such as communication, awards, higher education and networking initiatives.
We wish you all the best for 2026 and a Happy New Year!
Dennis MEIER, President
