Statement from the EMA presidency. Changes regarding the main EMA events: conference JEMS2020 postponed to 7-11 December 2020. ESM2020 school according to schedule (28 Sep - 9 Oct 2020). There will be an extra ESM school in 2021 (6-17 Sep 2021; Cluj-Napoca) and consequently break in 2022.

Professor E. F. Wassermann passed away on Friday, 31 January 2020. He was a professor at the University Duisburg-Essen, Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences (JSPS), the long-time spokesperson of the Magnetism Section of the German Physical Society and spokesperson of two collaborative research centers of the DFG.

A team from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) researchers turn to microbe beads to recover rare earth elements from consumer electronic waste.The team developed a scalable biosorbent material – a microbe-embedded polymer – by combining material science with microbiology. The new method could be used to recover REE’s from end of life products that use neodymium (NdFeB) magnets.

The EPS Condensed Matter Division Europhysics Prize for Outstanding Achievements in Condensed Matter Physics has been presented annually since 1975, and has become one of the most prestigious awards for condensed matter physics in Europe. The deadline for nominations is 30 March 2020.

The German Research Foundation has approved the creation of this center dedicated to Magnetic Materials for Efficient Energy Conversion, involving Darmstadt, Duissburg-Essen and Jülich.
