Bertrand DUPE, Officer for Higher Education, looks back at ESM2026 held last month in Uppsala, announces where ESM2027 will take place, and opens bids to host ESM2028.
Dear colleagues,
This summer, the European School of Magnetism (ESM) returned to Sweden for its 2026 edition in Uppsala. For two weeks, 100 young researchers from across Europe and beyond met around a programme combining lectures, tutorials, practical sessions and poster discussions. More than the scientific programme itself, ESM once again showed the importance of bringing our community together: creating time to discuss, discover neighbouring areas of magnetism and establish connections that will continue well after the school.
The participants' feedback illustrates this particularly well: About 88% of the participants surveyed answered that collaborations with peers they met during ESM. Students repeatedly highlighted the outstanding opportunity to meet colleagues from different countries and scientific backgrounds, better understand the breadth of magnetism, and exchange directly with lecturers, other PhD students, and postdocs. The social activities also played their role: several participants stressed how the opening activities and informal moments made it easier to meet and talk to each other.
Our final evaluation showed that almost 90% of the participants considered ESM 2026 a successful event. One participant perhaps captured the spirit of the school best by writing that it had been a pleasure to meet "so many new colleagues from around the world". This is precisely what we want ESM to be: not just a place for advanced training in magnetism, but also a place where the next generation of our community meets, exchanges ideas and starts new scientific relationships.
Of course, the feedback also gives us valuable input for improvement. Comments on the balance between lectures and tutorials, poster sessions, accommodation and accessibility will help us prepare future editions and continue developing ESM as an inclusive and scientifically ambitious school.
We are already looking further ahead. The ESM 2027 is already in preparation and will be held close to Marseille from 13 to 24 September 2027. The organisation of ESM 2028 is starting, and we invite universities, research institutes and local magnetism communities interested in hosting the school to submit a bid. Hosting ESM is an opportunity to welcome an international community of young researchers and lecturers, showcase local expertise, and contribute directly to training the next generation of magnetism researchers.
Please send inquiries to host 2028 and bids to esm@magnetism.eu before 1st December 2026.
With best regards,
Bertrand DUPÉ, Officer for Higher Education
