In this August 2026 editorial, the EMA sustainability team presents the work EMA has done to promote the sustainability of scientific research in magnetism.

Dear colleagues, members, and friends of EMA,

At EMA, we are concerned about global warming and the widespread use of nonrenewable resources. One of EMA’s goals is thus to promote the sustainability of scientific research in the field of magnetism. In order to work towards this goal, we established a sustainability working team last spring and are happy to look back at our first productive year.

After developing new guidelines and collecting various resources to make our research activities more sustainable (magnetism.eu/sustainability), we are now focusing on more hands-on projects. Currently, we are exploring a collaboration with InterRail to encourage and facilitate train travel to conferences. In our pilot project, we have already managed to support more than 20 participants on their train ride to the European School of Magnetism in Uppsala!

Furthermore, we are developing a second-hand market for materials and devices, which is soon going into the first test round. Would you like to support us in this endeavour? Or do you have other proposals, suggestions, or simply wish to engage actively? Then please contact us at sustainability@magnetism.eu.
