In this December 2025 editorial, Giacomo SALA, Officer for Carbon Footprint, Verena BREHM, and Stéphane FLAMENT have formed a new team to review our responsibility as individuals to evaluate and decrease the carbon footprint of our professional activities, and detail the commitment of EMA to contribute to it.

Dear colleagues, members, and friends of EMA,

EMA is concerned about global warming and the widespread use of nonrenewable resources. One of its goals is thus to promote the sustainability of scientific research in the field of magnetism. Following our former Carbon Footprint Officer, Bertrand Dupé, who is now in charge of the European School on Magnetism, a new working team was established in Spring 2025. The team comprises Giacomo Sala (EMA Officer for Sustainability), Verena Brehm, and Stéphane Flament. The names of the Office and team have been changed from “Carbon Footprint” to “Sustainability” to reflect the broader scope of EMA’s mission.

As a first step, we have developed new guidelines for sustainable travels and events and gathered a wide variety of resources that can be used to plan and organise our professional activities in a more sustainable way (look at our webpage). These resources are available to anyone – individual or group – interested in engaging themselves in favour of sustainability.

We are now exploring new ways to assist the community’s effort towards more sustainable research activities, in and outside the lab. Updates will follow in the upcoming months, so stay tuned!

In the meantime, we would like to hear your opinion on the topic of sustainability in scientific research. Could you help us by answering this 2-minute survey? Your voice counts!
