In this editorial, he new President and Vice-President of EMA, Dennis MEIER and Susana CARDOSO DE FREITAS, respectively, would like to give an overview of JEMS 2025 held at the end of August 2025 in Frankfurt, Germany, and say a few words about the next JEMS edition. They also report on the meeting of the General Council of the European Magnetism Association (EMA).

Dear colleagues, dear members of EMA,

JEMS 2025 was held in a hybrid format from August 24th to 29th in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, with 766 participants (94% on-site and 6% online) from 39 countries and more than 10 exhibitors, providing an outstanding platform for scientific exchange and networking! The Organising Committee was chaired by Oliver Gutfleisch (Technische Universität Darmstadt) and co-chaired by Lambert Alff (Technische Universität Darmstadt) and Jens Müller (Goethe Universität Frankfurt), while the Program Committee was co-chaired by Karin Everschor-Sitte (Universität Duisburg-Essen), Thomas Schrefl (Universität für Weiterbildung Krems), and Gaspare Varvaro (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche). The International Advisory Committee was chaired by Nora Dempsey (Institut Néel). A special EMA Session was held in Frankfurt, featuring plenary lectures by the EMA Young Scientist Award winners, Alvaro Martín Gallo Cordova (2024) and Johanna Fischer (2025), the annual report by the EMA presidents, and a casual networking event with snacks, where the EMA presidents and officers mingled with the community. Thanks to the hybrid organisation, the recording of all talks remains available to all registrants until mid-September.

The next JEMS will take place in 2027 in Prague, Czech Republic, chaired by Evgenia Tereshina-Chitrova and co-chaired by Vladimír Sechovský, under the auspices of the International Advisory Committee of JEMS. The dates for this 15th edition of JEMS will be announced shortly, and we are already looking forward to meeting you in Prague in 2027!

Please note that JEMS will not take place in 2026 as the IEEE International Magnetics Conference (INTERMAG 2026) will take place in Manchester (UK) from April 13th to 17th of that year, giving the European community an excellent chance to attend a major conference in magnetism in Europe.

The annual meeting of the General Council (GC) of EMA was held at JEMS 2025 on August 26th, gathering 18 participants on-site and 19 online. The GC is the supreme authority of EMA, consisting of national representatives of European countries active in the field of magnetism, as well as the Presidents and Officers of EMA. In addition, delegates from bodies associated with EMA were invited to the GC meeting, including PetaSpin, Spintronic Factory, the Magnetometry Network, the European Molecular Magnetism Network, and the Condensed Matter Division of the European Physical Society. While detailed minutes of the meeting will be made public in a couple of weeks, here is a selection of key topics:

  • The appointment of our new Officer for Sustainability, Giacomo Sala, and the Sustainability Working Group, led by him and Verena Brehm

  • The start of an EMA financial sponsorship program in 2026, within two frameworks: 1. Support the participation of young scientists in events; 2. Support the organisation of focused workshops and conferences

  • A report by all Officers about their activities this year

  • The election of the new President and Vice-President of EMA

Dennis Meier (Germany), the previous Vice-President, was confirmed as the new President for the coming three years. Susana Cardoso de Freitas (Portugal) was elected as Vice-President for the same duration.

All members of the GC warmly thanked Olivier Fruchart, President of EMA from 2022 to 2025, who has substantially contributed together with Dennis Meier to both consolidating EMA and expanding its actions, among which we would like to mention the following highlights: establishment of diversity, evaluation and sustainability guidelines; strengthening of ties with sister societies; establishment of a young EMA Officer; implementation of a membership and sponsorship program; strengthening joint actions with the private sector.

Olivier Fruchart will support EMA in the next three years as past president, providing assistance to the President and Vice-president when required; he will also continue to contribute as the newly installed Officer for EMA membership and sponsorship.

We would also like to remind you that both individuals and groups can now become EMA members, supporting our actions for the community. Your annual registration fee allows EMA to continue and further improve different actions, including communications, EMA awards, the newly established sponsorship program for young scientists and focused workshops/conferences, and fostering of European actions, such as lobbying of magnetism-related initiatives and events. Note that EMA is and will remain a non-profit organisation that serves the magnetism community in Europe and beyond.

With best regards,
Dennis MEIER, EMA President
Susana CARDOSO DE FREITAS, EMA Vice-President
