In this editorial, we report on the annual meeting of EMA’s General Council that took place during the ICM 2024 in Bologna, Italy. Furthermore, we provide some key information about JEMS 2025, which will take place in Frankfurt, Germany. We also invite you to consider individual and group membership to support EMA’s actions.

Dear colleagues, dear members of EMA,

The annual meeting of the General Council (GC) of EMA was held on July 3rd, gathering 15 participants onsite and over 25 online. The GC is the supreme authority of EMA, consisting of national representatives of European countries active in the field of magnetism, as well as the Presidents and Officers of EMA. In addition, delegates from bodies associated with EMA are invited to the GC meeting, including PetaSpin, Spintronics Factory, the Magnetometry Network, and the European Molecular Magnetism Network. While detailed minutes of the meeting will be made public in a couple of weeks, here is a selection of topics discussed.

  • The development of EMA membership (see last paragraph of this editorial for details)

  • The development of our links with National Societies in Europe and the partial renewal of the General Council

  • The search and appointment of an EMA Young Officer (Sofia Ferreira Texeira) to lead actions for and by the young scientists within EMA

  • A report by every Officer about their activities this year

  • The approval of the nomination of Sofia Ferreira Texeira as Young EMA Officer, and Jeffrey McCord as the new Officer for Awards.

  • The ongoing search for the replacement of the Officer for Carbon Footprint. If you feel like engaging or would like to nominate colleagues who are interested in this open position within EMA, do not hesitate to contact us. We take this opportunity to thank both previous Officers, Christian Back and Bertrand Dupé, for their involvement in EMA and for conducting their mission for the magnetism community.

The next JEMS will take place in 2025 in Frankfurt, chaired by Oliver Gutfleisch and Lambert Alff from Technical University Darmstadt, under the auspices of the International Advisory Committee of JEMS. The Program Committee will be chaired by Karin Everschor-Sitte (University of Duisburg-Essen), Thomas Schrefl (University for Continuing Education Krems) and Gaspare Varvaro (ISM-CNR, Rome). This 14th edition of JEMS will take place from 24th to 29th August 2025 and we are already looking forward to the meeting - save the date and see you in Frankfurt in August 2025!

We would also like to remind you that both individuals and groups can now register as EMA members, and we encourage you to consider registration to support our actions for the community. Your annual registration fee allows EMA to continue and further improve different actions, including communication, EMA awards, support of young scientists, and fostering of European actions, such as lobbying of magnetism-related initiatives and events. Importantly, EMA is and will remain a non-profit organization that serves the magnetism community in Europe and beyond. We are proud to be an inclusive association that is open to all, regardless of their personal, financial, geographical or institutional situation. Thus, we would like to emphasize that services and support are equally available for both members and non-members.

With best regards,

Olivier FRUCHART, EMA President
Dennis MEIER, EMA Vice-President
