In this editorial, Nuala CAFFREY, EMA Officer, discusses Gender and Diversity within the EMA
Dear colleagues,
As the Officer of Gender and Diversity within EMA, my role is to monitor and improve gender and diversity outcomes across the many actions of EMA, including JEMS, ESM, the awards, and the online seminar series.
I have recently returned from maternity leave, and would like to thank Emmanuelle Jal for so capably continuing our Gender and Diversity activities in my absence.
Recent Activities
-
We have now developed practical guidelines to help organisers integrate inclusivity and diversity into EMA-hosted events, as well as a mechanism to collect and analyse gender and diversity data from these events.
-
We marked the International Day of Women & Girls in Science 2025, #EveryVoiceInScience, by publishing anonymous quotes from EMA women on career challenges linked to gender, rewarding experiences, and changes that would make science more welcoming. You can still read them here.
-
The diversity in magnetism session at JEMS 2025 was a success, thanks to the engaging facilitation of Sofía Facal Belli from Skills 4 Science. Credit also goes to the JEMS 2025 organisers in Frankfurt for their family-friendly approach, including on-site childcare. If you were there and have reflections on any aspects of diversity and inclusion at the conference, good or bad, I'd love to hear them (equity@magnetism.eu), and can pass them on to future organisers.
-
In November, we oranged our website and social media presence to support the elimination of violence against women around the world. A small effort, but every little helps raise the profile of this important cause.
Looking Ahead
Now that I am back from maternity leave, I am keen to build on this momentum, and would welcome new members to the Gender and Diversity team, whatever your background or career stage. Ways to get involved could include: supporting diversity aspects of JEMS 2027; helping organise a Diversity in Magnetism e-seminar; or supporting the analysis of gender and diversity data from EMA events. There is no formal application or fixed commitment - just email equity@magnetism.eu, and we can discuss how you might like to contribute.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any ideas or comments related to gender and diversity in EMA.
Best regards,
Nuala CAFFREY, Officer for Gender and Diversity
