In this editorial, Daniela PETTI, digital networking Officer, gives an overview of EMA's online seminars, as well as information about its future developments.

Dear colleagues,

The European Magnetism Association (EMA) has been organizing a series of online seminars since November 2020, including both Plenary Lectures and Early-Career E-Seminars by early-stage researchers. These events promote Magnetism in Europe and encourage networking among EMA members while maintaining a low carbon footprint.

We remind you that we welcome nominations for the Early Career series. If you have seen an excellent PhD defence or a postdoc seminar recently on the topic of magnetism and of interest to our community, please let us know about it.
Nominations can be made by sending an e-mail to Daniela Petti or via the form available on the EMA website.

As you may know, the abstracts for our seminars are presented in a video format and can all be viewed on our website . Starting this year, we will have an award for the best abstract submitted by the early career researchers. The video-abstract that stands out for clarity, creativity, and execution will be recognized during the upcoming JEMS conference.

In the following, we will give you an overview of our activities in 2024 and our plans for future initiatives:

In 2024, the number of researchers reached by the online seminar series continued to grow. The recorded video abstracts and seminars, available on the EMA website, have been viewed more than 5000 times. The majority of viewers is from Europe, but we also have many viewers from around the globe, e.g., from India and US. Regarding the live sessions, apart from Zoom attendees, we reached more than 500 people on Twitch cumulatively, with more than 100 people attending some of the individual streamed events.

We also launched the “Industry in the Spotlight” series, which has been well-received by the community. This year, we will continue to develop this series in collaboration with the Industrial Relations team of EMA, together with our "textbook style" seminars in collaboration with the European School of Magnetism, which have been well received in the recent years. We would also like to organize special seminars or events on diversity, equality, and inclusion in academia, topics under growing threat in the professional sphere around the world at the moment.

Regarding the organization, in January 2025 Daniela Petti resumed her role as Officer for Digital Networking. She continues to coordinate seminar planning with the ongoing support of Joo-Von Kim and Sebastian Mayer, as well as input from the committee, responsible for evaluating speaker candidates.

We would like to underline that ensuring geographical, thematic, and gender diversity among researchers in magnetism remains central to our vision. Therefore, we warmly invite your suggestions for the seminars and, above all, nominations for the Early-Career E-Series. You can stay updated on the EMA seminars and plenary talks by subscribing to the EMA mailing list, by checking the website, or by following the EMA account on Bluesky and Instagram.

We look forward to seeing you all online!

With our best regards,

Daniela PETTI, Officer for Gender and Diversity
Joo-Von KIM and
Sebastian MEYER
