EMA presidents review main 2024 activities and provide outlook for 2025.

Dear colleagues and friends of the European Magnetism Association EMA,

We wish you and your loved ones a fruitful and enjoyable 2025. Time flies and so much has happened in the world since our last New Year's EMA Editorial. More than ever, we wish for a peaceful future and that science and scientific exchange across borders can contribute to this. By encouraging an open exchange of ideas and the promotion of an inclusive European magnetism community, we hope that we can do our bit to bring people together and promote research, knowledge transfer, and friendship. This ambition underlines EMA's objectives as a learned society - developing knowledge, connecting people, and contributing to the development of society.

In 2024, the International Conference on Magnetism (ICM) came to Europe, taking place in Bologna in July. Thus, as it is custom, no JEMS was organized in 2024 and EMA supported ICM. The ICM conference was a great success, attracting more than 2000 participants! On the side of higher education, the European School on Magnetism (ESM 2024) took place in York at the end of the summer, chaired by Stuart Cavill and with the guidance of Bertrand Dupé, EMA's Officer for Higher Education. The school gathered 100 participants onsite and 35 online, coming from all over Europe and beyond. Over two weeks, the international students enjoyed lectures, tutorials and practicals, round table discussions about diversity and career development, and the chance to meet directly with a range of speakers from industry. We are grateful to all who contributed to this successful event!

We are now looking forward to our major events in magnetism that will take place in Europe in 2025: The next European School on Magnetism (ESM 2025), will take place in Liège from 30th June to 11th July, 2025, and the call to request participation will open in the coming weeks - stay tuned!

The Joint European Magnetic Symposia (JEMS2025) will take place 24th - 29th August, 2025, in Frankfurt, Germany. JEMS 2025 is chaired by Oliver Gutfleisch from TU Darmstadt with the guidance of Nora Dempsey, President of the JEMS International Advisory Committee. The conference venue in Frankfurt can be conveniently reached by train or single flights for many of you, allowing to minimize the carbon footprint of the event. You can nominate plenary, semi-plenary and invited speakers till 13th January, 2025.

Note that JEMS2025 will include a special EMA session, consisting of two plenary talks given by the EMA Young Scientist awardees of 2024 and 2025. In addition, we will give an EMA status report and invite all for an informal session, where the community can meet, and where the EMA presidents, officers and national representatives will be available for a chat. Finally, we would like to remind you of two important EMA-related points:

  • Nominations for the EMA Young Scientist 2025 Award can be made until 31st January, 2025! Eligibility extends to researchers up to five years after their PhD defence, with extensions available for qualifying leaves. Please do not forget to nominate recent PhD graduates and post-docs who have conducted outstanding research and meet the eligibility criteria.

  • Consider renewing or starting your EMA membership for 2025. Your voluntary membership fees go back to the community by supporting our actions, such as communication, awards, higher education and networking initiatives.

Stay tuned and we wish you all the best for 2025 and a happy New Year!

Olivier FRUCHART, President
Dennis MEIER, Vice-President
