In this Editorial, Nuala CAFFREY, EMA Officer, discusses Gender and Diversity within the EMA, highlighting ongoing and upcoming actions: EMA Discord channel ‘Women in Magnetism’, International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

Dear colleagues,

As the Officer of Gender and Diversity within EMA, my role is to monitor and improve gender and diversity outcomes across the many actions of EMA, including the Joint European Magnetism Symposia (JEMS), the European School on Magnetism (ESM), the awards, and the online seminar series.

In the last year or so, I have worked to ensure that the events held and supported by EMA operate with a Code of Conduct and are issued with guidelines to ensure inclusivity and diversity are considered at all stages by the organisers. I was heartened to see that all bids for JEMS 2025 included clear statements and actions in this regard. I will continue to offer my support to the organisers of all future JEMS and ESM events, helping to make them welcoming to all.

As 2024 progresses, my aim now is to build a community where women in magnetism can share experiences and support each other outside of EMA events. To this end, we have decided to create a private space on the EMA Discord channel where women in magnetism can share personal experiences, discuss upcoming events, ask for advice, upload relevant articles, and build that community. To join in, please send an email to nuala.caffrey@ucd.ie with the Subject: Join EMA Women in Magnetism.

Finally, the annual UN Women & Girls in Science Day is fast approaching – to mark it, we will be highlighting the work of some of the amazing women working in magnetism around Europe on February 9th, 2024. Follow us on the EMA social media channels (twitter.com/EmaMagnetism and linkedin.com/company/the-ema) to see all!

As always, if you have any ideas, suggestions, or comments related to gender and diversity in EMA, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

Nuala CAFFREY, Officer for Gender and Diversity
