Eberhard F. Wassermann passed away on Friday, 31 January 2020. He was a professor at the University Duisburg-Essen, Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences (JSPS), the long-time spokesperson of the Magnetism Section of the German Physical Society and spokesperson of two collaborative research centers of the DFG.
He was honored with the “Ehrennadel” and the “Medal for Scientific Outreach” (Medaille für naturwissenschaftliche Publizistik) of the German Physical Society. After his retirement he directed his energy at organizing a highly successful public outreach event – the “Highlights of Physics”. This yearly event drew regularly crows of ten thousands of visitors in different German cities. Eberhard loved magnetism and low temperatures. Current activities within the framework of a newly established CRC/TRR 270 “Hysteresis design of Magnetic Materials for Efficient Energy Conversion - Hommage” would not have been possible without his ground breaking research on magnetic materials in the last millennium – materials in bulk or nanoparticle form. “As a person, scientist and activist-for-magnetism Eberhard will be sorely missed by the community. We will honor his memory and actions” says Prof. M. Farle.
